Catania: Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling

4.7 (986 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This sailing trip leaves from the old customs building at Catania's port and follows the coast north past black volcanic rock. The first stop is for swimming and a bit of snorkelling, after which the crew serves a spread of Sicilian products on board: home-made bread, local cheese, vegetables in oil and pistachio specialities. From there the boat continues towards Acitrezza, with Mount Etna visible behind the coastline.

Near Acitrezza you get a close view of the Faraglioni, the basalt sea stacks linked to the story of Ulysses and the Cyclops, along with old Arab lookout towers built into the volcanic rock. The trip sails on a Bavaria 46 or Dufour 41 yacht, with a maximum of twelve guests on board, and runs twice a day: a morning departure at nine and an afternoon one at half past two.

The itinerary can change with the weather and sea conditions, and the skipper has the final say on safety grounds. Snorkelling gear and a stand-up paddleboard are provided for the swim stop at Lachea Island, and the whole round trip, from leaving Catania's Vecchia Dogana pier to returning, takes about four hours. A boarding fee is charged locally on top of the ticket price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I meet the boat?

At Vecchia Dogana, on Via Cardinale Dusmet in Catania, near the old port. Both the morning and afternoon departures leave from the same point, so there's no need to check separate addresses depending on which time slot you book.

Is snorkelling gear included?

Yes, masks and snorkels are provided for the swim stop, along with a stand-up paddleboard you can use while the boat is anchored. There's no need to bring or hire your own equipment for either activity.

Is the appetizer a full meal?

It's a generous spread of Sicilian products, home-made bread, local cheese, vegetables in oil and pistachio specialities, served with sparkling wine, but it's an appetizer rather than a sit-down lunch or dinner.

What happens if the sea is rough?

The itinerary can be adjusted, or stops changed, depending on the weather and sea conditions on the day. The skipper makes the final call for safety, and the operator will be in touch about rescheduling if conditions rule out sailing altogether.

Is there an extra fee to pay locally?

Yes, a boarding fee of €15 per person is charged on top of the ticket price, in addition to the appetizer and sparkling wine included in the booking. It's worth bringing cash for this, since it isn't collected through the online payment.
