Boat Tour & Snorkeling at the Cyclops Islands with Aperitif

About This Experience
This snorkelling trip departs from Aci Castello rather than central Catania, on a 13-metre boat that covers close to 20km of volcanic coastline. The route runs between the La Timpa Nature Reserve and the Cyclops Islands Marine Protected Area, taking in basalt cliffs, rocky headlands and small coves along the way, with a pass near Ulysses' Caves. Departures run through the day, weather permitting.
A marine biologist and an underwater guide are on board throughout, explaining the geology and marine life before each snorkelling stop. In the water you can expect seagrass meadows, patches of white sand against dark volcanic rock, and marine life that can include groupers, bream, octopus and various sponges, depending on the day. Snorkel equipment is provided, and the guides tailor their explanations to the group's interests and experience level.
Drinks and light snacks, aperitifs, fruit and bottled water, are served during the trip, and there's time built in for photos of the Cyclops Islands from the water as well as a couple of shorter, quieter swim stops. The boat returns to Aci Castello at the end of the roughly three-hour trip. Because it starts south of the main Cyclops coastline, this route reaches the marine reserve more directly than some of the trips that begin at Catania's city port.

Best tour and highly recommended! Our kids played with the captain’s son and they are not only knowledgeable but also super friendly and nice!

Nous avons vu beaucoup de poissons ! Nous avons fait le snorkeling pendant qu’un autre groupe plongeait. Petite structure, accueil chaleureux. Beaucoup d’explications sur l’histoire et la géographie de cet endroit de la côte.

A very nice experience. Excellent guide on board. We had a great time snorkeling. Very friendly staff. Thank you to Francesco and his crew for giving my family an afternoon to remember on the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tour really start in Catania?
No, despite the name, it departs from Aci Castello, a few kilometres north of central Catania. The meeting point is Etna & Sea Excursions on Via Provinciale; check the address before you arrange transport.
Is snorkelling gear included?
Yes, snorkel equipment is provided, and a marine biologist or underwater guide gives tips before each snorkelling stop, so first-time snorkellers get some guidance rather than just equipment handed over.
What might we see while snorkelling?
The guides mention groupers, schools of bream, octopus and various sponges, along with seagrass meadows and volcanic rock formations, though exact sightings vary by day and aren't guaranteed, as with any wild marine environment.
Is the food served a full meal?
No, it's aperitifs, fruit and bottled water rather than a sit-down meal. Travellers wanting a full lunch included might prefer one of the longer sailing trips from Catania's main port instead.
Who shouldn't book this trip?
The operator lists wheelchair users and people prone to seasickness as unsuitable, given the open-sea route and the time spent in and around the water. Travellers with other mobility or health concerns should check directly with the operator before booking.
