Sunset Boat Trips

Which Sunset Trip Fits Your Evening

Routes, timing, food, prices and what to wear for a sunset cruise from Catania, from a two-hour Aci Trezza crossing to a dinner sail.

Sunset instead of midday

Most boat trips from Catania run in the late morning or early afternoon, timed around the warmest hours and the longest swim stops. A sunset cruise flips that: it leaves later, runs shorter, and times the return so the last hour or so happens as the light softens and Etna’s outline darkens against the sky. If you want the full four- to six-hour coastal run with several swim stops instead, our sailing tour page covers those daytime options; a sunset departure buys you a shorter slice of the same coast, timed for the sky and not for the hottest hours.

A sunset trip is also one of the easiest boat trips to fit into a stay in Catania. You can spend the morning around Piazza del Duomo and the historic centre, go up Etna or elsewhere in eastern Sicily during the day, and still be on the water by early evening, because two of the three trips on this page leave from piers inside Catania harbour, a short walk from the centre.

For most first-time visitors the best choice is a sail of around three hours from Catania harbour with a swim stop and the aperitif included. It gives you time under sail, a swim and drinks at anchor without taking up the whole evening. Our guide to boat tours with aperitivo compares the food and drinks on each.

The main reasons to book one

  • It takes up an evening and leaves the day free.
  • Catania and Etna look their best from offshore in the evening light.
  • Most of these trips include a swim stop.
  • An aperitif of drinks and local snacks is included on almost all of them.
  • A sailing boat feels more like an outing than a straightforward sightseeing motorboat.
  • They suit couples and small groups well.
  • Catania harbour is close to the historic centre.

Sunset sail with dinnerAbout 3 hoursA date night or special eveningThe aperitif and a swim, then a pasta course back at the port

Most leave from Catania harbour on sailing boats with small groups; the dinner sail, for example, takes no more than eight guests. When we checked in October 2026, no private sunset sail had a reviewed listing on GetYourGuide.

What “sunset” means on each trip

The three sunset options compared above are not identical. The Sunset Sailing Tour with Aperitif (our breakdown) is the longest at 3.5 hours: it meets at Caffè del Porto, sails past the Ulysses’ Caves and Aci Castello with an early swim and snorkel stop, then anchors off Aci Trezza for about an hour of drinks (Aperol Spritz, beer, wine or soft drinks, with local snacks) before the final hour back to Catania as the light fades. It costs from $60 per person and is rated 4.7/5 from more than 180 reviews.

The Boat tour to Aci Trezza with the chance to see dolphins (our breakdown) is shorter and simpler: two hours from the Aci Trezza waterfront, past the Faraglioni with Mount Etna behind them, a swim stop, and a small chance of a dolphin sighting on the crossing. It costs from $57 and is rated 4.9/5 from more than 100 reviews.

The Sunset Dinner Sailing Tour (our breakdown) sails south toward the Oasi del Simeto reserve with a swim stop and an aperitif at anchor, then serves a pasta dinner back on land at the port once the boat has returned, which is worth knowing if you pictured the meal happening at sea. It takes up to eight guests, costs from $90 and is rated 4.5/5 from 64 reviews.

What does a Catania sunset cruise look like?

There is no single standard route, and two trips both sold as “Catania sunset sailing” can feel quite different. Most fall into one of three patterns.

1. Catania Bay and the coast close to the city

The shortest sunset trips, usually about two hours, stay near Catania. A typical one leaves the harbour, sails along the bay toward the Playa beaches or San Giovanni Li Cuti, stops for a swim and then serves the aperitif. They suit visitors who mainly want the sunset, a swim, a drink and a sail with no time spent travelling. On a two-hour trip from Catania, do not expect a tour of the Cyclops Riviera as well.

2. North along the volcanic coast toward the Ulysses’ Caves

The 3.5-hour Sunset Sailing Tour heads north from the harbour along the lava coast, past the Ulysses’ Caves and Aci Castello, to anchor off Aci Trezza. This is the right pattern if the sightseeing matters almost as much as the sunset, because more of the trip is spent travelling under sail and less of it at anchor in the bay.

3. South toward the Oasi del Simeto

The Sunset Dinner Sailing Tour turns the other way, south along the coast toward the Oasi del Simeto nature reserve, with a swim stop and Etna in view, then a pasta dinner at the port. Choose it if the food and the sailing matter more to you than the sightseeing.

Will a Catania sunset cruise visit Aci Trezza and the Cyclops Islands?

Not necessarily, and assuming it will is one of the commonest booking mistakes. Aci Trezza, the Cyclops Islands and Aci Castello lie north of Catania and are the centre of most daytime boat trips, but a two-hour sunset sail from Catania does not have the time to reach the Riviera, allow a relaxed swim and return after sunset. Of the three trips compared above, the 3.5-hour Sunset Sailing Tour anchors off Aci Trezza and the two-hour crossing starts there, while the dinner sail heads south.

If the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi and Lachea Island are the priority, book a trip whose itinerary names them, or take a daytime trip: our guide to Cyclops Riviera boat tours covers the route in full.

Sunset cruise or Cyclops Riviera tour?

Choose a sunset cruise if…Choose a Cyclops Riviera trip if…
Atmosphere matters mostSightseeing matters most
You’re travelling as a coupleYou want to see the Faraglioni up close
You want an evening activityYou want to see Lachea Island
You already have plans for the dayYou want longer swimming and snorkelling stops
You want wine and an aperitifYou want to explore Aci Trezza
You want Etna in the evening lightYou want Aci Castello from the water

With enough time in Catania, you can do both. A Cyclops Riviera trip is mainly about the landscape and the swimming; a good sunset sail is as much about being on the water in the evening.

Etna, wind and the light

This needs a word of explanation before you book. Catania sits on Sicily’s east coast, so from the shore you look east across the Ionian Sea. The sun sets behind you, over the island, and never into the sea in front of you. Do not book expecting a sun sinking into an empty horizon.

Once the boat is offshore, though, you can turn back toward the coast, and the geography starts to work in your favour. On a clear evening you can see Etna silhouetted against the sky, golden light over Catania, reflections on the water, the dark volcanic shoreline, clouds lit up around the volcano and the city lights coming on as you head back into the harbour. Book it for Etna and the coast in the evening light; that is the view no other part of Sicily gives you.

Whether the volcano shows clearly depends on the wind on the day. Locally, the maestrale, a cooler wind from the northwest, tends to clear the sky and calm the sea, improving visibility toward Etna; the scirocco, a hot, humid wind off Africa, roughens the water and dulls the view instead. Neither is something a skipper can control, so a hazy evening is possible even on a trip that runs exactly to plan.

Are sunset cruises better on a sailboat?

For this trip, we think so. A fast motorboat is useful when you need to cover a long stretch of coast quickly, but speed matters little at sunset. What you are paying for is the experience: the sails going up, slower movement, quiet stretches with the engine off, sitting on deck with a drink, a swim and the light changing. Two of the three trips compared on this page are sailing boats, and on the 3.5-hour Sunset Sailing Tour the skipper offers to show guests the basics of sailing along the way.

Choose a sailboat if:

  • romance and atmosphere matter to you;
  • you enjoy being on the water;
  • you don’t mind travelling slowly;
  • you want space to relax on deck.

Consider a motorboat if:

  • you want to cover more of the coast;
  • you specifically want Aci Trezza or several swim stops;
  • sailing itself doesn’t interest you.

The two-hour trips from Aci Trezza run in smaller boats close to the village, and the 2-Hour Dolphin Watching Boat Trip at Sunset from the Acitrezza pier waits offshore with the engine idling for dolphins, then passing beneath the Faraglioni on the way back as the sun goes down. It costs from $40 and is a new listing, rated 5.0 from only three reviews so far; treat the rating as an early impression.

What’s served

Expect a version of the classic Sicilian aperitif instead of a formal dinner, except on the dinner sail. On these trips the aperitif means some combination of Sicilian cheeses, cured meats, crostini, finger food, local snacks, water, wine and prosecco or another sparkling wine. The 3.5-hour sunset sail serves a full drinks aperitif with local snacks at anchor; the private group trip serves prosecco with locally prepared appetisers; the dinner sail serves cheeses, cured meats and sparkling wine at sea; and the two-hour Aci Trezza crossing does not promise a bar on board, although guests are often offered something informally.

The word “aperitivo” is flexible, though. On one boat it means several substantial plates; on another it is little more than a glass of wine and some crisps. If the food matters, read exactly what is included and do not judge by the tour’s title.

Aperitivo cruise vs dinner cruise

We would normally choose an aperitif sail unless dinner is one of your priorities. A sunset trip is at its best when people are moving around, swimming and sitting outside, and a formal meal takes attention away from the sailing. An aperitif fits the evening better: swim, dry off, have a glass of wine and something to eat, watch the sunset, sail back.

A dinner sail makes more sense when you are celebrating an anniversary, when it is your main plan for the evening, when you would rather not find a restaurant afterwards, or when the food is the point. Only the Sunset Dinner Sailing Tour includes a sit-down pasta course, and it is served after the boat is back at the dock, once you are off the water. Our guide to which Catania boat trips include a real meal compares the food across every trip on the site.

Can you swim during a Catania sunset cruise?

Usually, in warm weather, yes. All three trips compared on this page include a swim stop: near Catania early in the 3.5-hour sail, off Aci Trezza on the two-hour crossing and on the way to the Simeto reserve on the dinner sail. A swim is never guaranteed, though. Wind, waves, water temperature and the timing of the sunset can all change the route, and the skipper has the final say on safety. If swimming matters to you, book a trip that lists a swim stop and do not assume every sunset sail has one.

Timing shifts with the season

None of these operators publish one fixed departure time, and for good reason: the Aci Trezza crossing’s own listing notes that its times are built around sunset, so the departure moves with the season. A trip that leaves close to 8pm in midsummer would leave well before 6pm in late autumn, since the point is to be out on the water when the sun goes down. Check the confirmed departure time for your exact date on your booking and do not assume a fixed evening slot.

Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early unless your ticket says otherwise. A sailing boat is not a walking tour: once it has cast off, the skipper is unlikely to come back for someone who is late.

How long should a sunset cruise be?

2 hours

Best if you are short of time, you mainly want an aperitif and the sunset, you are travelling with children, or you want the cheapest option. Two hours is enough for a pleasant evening on the water but not for exploring the coast.

3 hours, our favourite

Three hours gives the skipper time to leave the harbour properly, raise the sails, cover part of the coast, stop for a swim, serve the aperitif and come back after sunset without rushing. The dinner sail runs about three hours, and the Sunset Sailing Tour 3.5.

4+ hours

Worth considering if the itinerary takes in more of the Cyclops coast, although at that length you are close to a half-day boat trip and no longer a simple sunset sail.

How much does a Catania sunset cruise cost?

Prices vary with the boat, the length of the trip, the size of the group, the food and the booking platform. These were the starting prices on GetYourGuide when we checked in October 2026:

ExperienceFrom
Two-hour sunset crossing from Aci Trezza$57 per person
3.5-hour Sunset Sailing Tour with Aperitif from Catania$60 per person, plus a €10 skipper fee
Sunset Dinner Sailing Tour from Catania$90 per person, plus a €15 boarding fee

Treat these as a guide and check the final booking page, because prices, taxes, boarding fees and inclusions change.

Watch for extra fees

Two of the three trips add a fee paid on the day: the Sunset Sailing Tour’s €10 skipper fee and the dinner sail’s €15 boarding fee, both on top of the price you pay at booking. Compare the final price with the fees added, and ignore the headline figure on the search results page.

Shared or private sunset cruise?

Shared tour

For most visitors, a shared trip is the better value. It suits couples, one or two travellers, anyone happy to meet other people on board, and anyone watching the budget. These are small sailing boats, and a shared trip is never a big tour group: the dinner sail takes up to eight guests.

Private charter

The sums change once you have a group. A private boat suits anniversaries, proposals, birthdays, families, groups of friends, photographers and anyone who values privacy. No private sunset sail had a reviewed listing on GetYourGuide when we checked, but private boats are bookable for the daytime: the Private Sailing tour along Catania & Cyclops coast costs $609 for up to twelve plus a cash skipper fee, which for a full boat works out at about $51 each plus a share of the fee.

Our rule

For one to three people, a shared trip is usually the sensible choice. For six or more, always compare the private price before buying individual tickets. Our private boat tour page compares the private options for every time of day.

Is a Catania sunset cruise romantic?

Yes. For a couple, it is probably the best boat trip in Catania. A daytime trip is better for active sightseeing; sunset is better for anniversaries, honeymoons, proposals, date nights and birthdays. A private boat makes it more intimate, but we would not pay the premium automatically: a small-group sailing boat with six or eight passengers can still feel relaxed and personal.

If romance is the point, look for a small group, a sailing boat, comfortable deck space, an aperitif included, at least two and a half to three hours to avoid a rushed evening, and a private charter if the budget makes sense.

Is it good for families?

It can be. A two-hour sunset sail is often easier on children than a six-hour daytime trip. But evening sails tend to revolve around wine, the aperitif, couples and quiet time on deck, and they are not designed with children in mind. Before booking with young children, check the minimum age, whether there are life jackets in their size, whether there is a toilet, how easy it is to board, whether the swim stop means climbing a ladder and what time you will be back. Families who mainly want swimming and sightseeing may be happier on a morning trip along the Cyclops Riviera.

When is the best time of year for a Catania sunset cruise?

June to September

The best months for warm-water swimming and long evenings. Expect warm evenings, a warmer sea, later sunsets, more departures and more demand; book popular dates ahead, especially in July and August.

April–May

Often a good compromise. There may be fewer departures and the water is cooler, but the evenings can be comfortable and the coast is less busy. Bring an extra layer for the sail back.

October

Can be very good, especially early in the month. The sea holds its summer warmth longer than the air, but the evenings turn cooler, the days shorten quickly and fewer trips run.

November–March

Do not plan a winter stay around finding a sunset sail every evening. Some private sailing may still be possible, but the weather and the reduced winter schedules matter far more. Our guide to the best time for a boat trip in Catania has the sea temperature month by month.

Is morning or sunset better?

Choose a morning trip if you want the clearest conditions for sightseeing, plenty of swimming, snorkelling, the Cyclops Islands, or a more active outing. Choose sunset for atmosphere, photography, cooler temperatures, the aperitif, Etna in the evening light or a romantic evening. An afternoon trip sits between the two; our guide to morning, afternoon and sunset boat tours compares all three.

For a first-time visitor whose main aim is to see the Cyclops coast, we would usually choose daytime. For someone asking how to spend their last evening in Catania, we would choose sunset.

What to wear

Keep it simple. For a summer sunset sail, bring a swimsuit, light clothes, a towel, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a light jacket or overshirt and a dry change of clothes if you like. Do not dress as though you are going straight on to a smart restaurant: sailing boats have ropes, narrow steps and wet decks, and comfortable shoes with grip are far more use than heels, and the skipper may ask you to take your shoes off altogether.

Don’t forget a light layer

This is the part of a sunset sail people most often underestimate. Catania can feel very warm while you wait at the harbour. Then the sun goes down, the boat starts moving, the sea breeze reaches you and you may still be damp from the swim, and a 30°C afternoon suddenly feels very different. Even in summer, a thin shirt, a sweater or a windproof layer is useful; in spring and October, treat it as essential.

What about seasickness?

Sunset trips are shorter than full-day ones, which helps, but a sailing boat still moves. If you know you are prone to motion sickness, take your usual remedy before you leave, go easy on alcohol before boarding, stay up on deck, look at the horizon, sit near the middle of the boat and, if your dates are flexible, pick a calm evening. A sunny day does not mean a flat sea; the wind matters as much.

What happens if the weather is bad?

This is a sea trip, and the weather always wins. Itineraries can change because of the weather, the state of the sea or instructions from the maritime authorities, and the skipper makes the final call on safety. In practice that can mean a slightly different departure time, a changed route, no swim, a sail that stays closer to Catania, or a cancellation.

Choose a trip with a reasonable cancellation policy, especially outside midsummer, and if a sunset sail is one of the main things you want to do in Catania, book it before your last evening; that leaves another night in reserve if the weather cancels it.

Logistics

Two of the three trips compared above meet on Via Cardinale Dusmet inside Catania harbour: Caffè del Porto for the 3.5-hour sail and Vecchia Dogana for the dinner sail, all a short walk from the historic centre. The harbour is large and the piers are separate. Do not just tell a taxi driver “the port”; give the exact meeting point on your ticket. Our guide to where Catania boat trips leave from maps every pier.

The Aci Trezza trip meets on the waterfront there instead, roughly 9 to 12 km north of Catania; a taxi takes about 13 to 15 minutes each way, or the AMTS 534 bus connects the two towns directly. Bring a towel and swimwear in case the sea allows a swim, plus something warmer for after the sun goes down, and carry some cash for the fees paid on the day. Boarding on all three is directly onto the boat, and none of them suit wheelchair users.

Can you book a sunset cruise on the same day?

Sometimes, but sunset trips have two limits ordinary attractions do not: small boats, and one sunset a day. If a boat carries eight passengers, there is no second batch of tickets. It makes the biggest difference on Friday and Saturday evenings, in July and August, around anniversaries and for private boats. In high season, book several days ahead; the 3.5-hour sunset sail asks for at least a day’s notice, and if the date matters for a private boat, book it as soon as you know your plans.

What to check before booking

These details matter more than the star rating.

  1. The departure point. Catania harbour, Aci Trezza or somewhere else? They are not interchangeable.
  2. The length. A two-hour sunset sail and a 3.5-hour coastal trip are very different evenings.
  3. The route. Look for named places: Catania Bay, San Giovanni Li Cuti, the Ulysses’ Caves, the Oasi del Simeto, Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, the Cyclops Islands.
  4. The maximum group size. Eight or ten people on a sailing boat is a different experience from a larger excursion boat.
  5. The swim. Check that a swim stop is listed.
  6. The food. Does the aperitif mean one drink and some crisps, or wine, cheeses, cured meats and Sicilian specialities?
  7. Extra charges. Boarding fees, skipper fees, fuel, drinks, snorkelling gear and harbour charges.
  8. The cancellation policy. It matters more for a trip that depends on the weather.

Catania sunset cruise vs Taormina sunset cruise

If you are staying in Catania, we would not travel to Taormina just for a sunset sail unless you specifically want the coast around Taormina and Isola Bella. A sunset sail from Catania is better for views of Etna, convenience from the centre, sailing, the volcanic city coastline and an easy evening out. Taormina and Giardini Naxos are better for Isola Bella, sea caves, dramatic cliffs and a classic resort coast. A Catania sail makes most sense as part of your time in Catania itself.

Is a Catania sunset cruise worth it?

Yes, if you choose it for the right reason. Do not book one expecting the most complete sightseeing trip in eastern Sicily. Book it for two or three hours under sail, a swim, Sicilian wine, Etna and the evening light: for that combination, it is one of the best short outings from Catania. It also answers a practical question, which is what to do between the end of a day’s sightseeing and going out for the evening. Instead of going back to the hotel, you spend those hours at sea.

Which Catania sunset cruise should you book?

Our first choice

The format we would choose first is a sail of about three hours from Catania harbour with a small group, a swim stop and an aperitif with wine or prosecco. The Sunset Sailing Tour with Aperitif is that trip, with the longest route of the three and an hour at anchor off Aci Trezza.

Best if you’re short on time

A two-hour sunset trip, ideal if you already have dinner booked. You still get the main ingredients: time on the water, a swim and the evening light, and you are back on land in time to eat. The Boat tour to Aci Trezza is the best-reviewed of them.

Best for couples

We would book a good small-group sailing boat, such as the Sunset Sailing Tour with Aperitif. For a proposal or a big anniversary, ask a private-charter operator whether an evening departure is possible.

Best for food

The Sunset Dinner Sailing Tour, with the aperitif at sea and a traditional pasta course back at the harbour. Read the listing: the dinner happens on land.

Best if sightseeing matters most

A three-hour or longer trip that names sights along the volcanic coast, such as the Ulysses’ Caves. A short aperitif sail around the bay will not show you much of it. If Aci Trezza and the Faraglioni are essential, choose a daytime Cyclops Riviera trip instead.

Our ideal Catania evening

With one free summer evening in Catania, we would finish sightseeing and be back at the hotel by about 5pm, shower and change, walk to the port at around 6pm, sail, swim and have the aperitif from about 6.30 until 9pm, then walk back into the historic centre for a gelato, a drink or a late dinner. The times move with the sunset, but the shape of the evening works well. If your trip includes a lot of food, do not book a restaurant table for the minute you are due back: boats can return a little later than planned.

If you would rather compare every format side by side before settling on a sunset trip, our guide to choosing between them walks through sailing, snorkelling, private and sunset options together.
